What is a Salary (CTC to In-Hand) Calculator?

Every offer letter in India throws around one big, exciting number โ€” the CTC, or Cost to Company. What actually lands in your bank account each month is smaller, once Provident Fund contributions, professional tax, and other deductions are taken out. This calculator bridges that gap: enter your annual CTC and it estimates how it splits into Basic pay, HRA, PF contribution, and the approximate monthly amount you'll actually see credited to your account.

CTC Breakdown Formula

Basic Salary = CTC ร— 50%
HRA = Basic ร— 40%
Employee PF = Basic ร— 12%
Gross Monthly = CTC รท 12
Approx. In-Hand = Gross Monthly โˆ’ PF โˆ’ (Gross Monthly ร— 1%, approx. professional tax/other deductions)

Worked Example

Take an annual CTC of โ‚น12,00,000.

ComponentAnnualMonthly
Basic Salary (50% of CTC)โ‚น6,00,000โ‚น50,000
HRA (40% of Basic)โ‚น2,40,000โ‚น20,000
Employee PF (12% of Basic)โ‚น72,000โ‚น6,000
Gross Monthly Pay (CTC รท 12)โ€”โ‚น1,00,000
Approx. In-Handโ‰ˆ โ‚น11,16,000โ‰ˆ โ‚น93,000

So on a โ‚น12,00,000 CTC, expect roughly โ‚น93,000 credited each month after PF and about 1% for professional tax and minor deductions. This is only an estimate โ€” your actual in-hand salary depends on your company's specific pay structure (some CTCs bundle in bonuses, gratuity, or insurance premiums), the professional tax slab of your state (Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal each differ), and your income tax liability under the old or new regime.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your Annual CTC exactly as mentioned in your offer letter.
  2. Click Calculate to see the estimated Basic, HRA, PF, and in-hand salary breakup.
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: If your actual payslip shows a different Basic-to-CTC ratio, use that instead โ€” some companies fix Basic at 40% or 45% of CTC rather than the commonly assumed 50%, which changes both your HRA and PF figures.

To see how much that PF deduction can grow over your career, check the EPF Calculator for a retirement corpus estimate.
