What is a Brick Calculator?

A Brick Calculator estimates how many bricks are needed to build a wall of a given length and height, based on standard modular brick face dimensions plus a wastage buffer for breakage during transport and masonry cutting. This is a go-to tool for Indian homeowners supervising boundary walls, compound walls, or partition walls, and for small contractors quoting material costs before a mason starts laying bricks.

The calculator uses a standard modular brick face size of 19 cm × 9 cm (0.19 m × 0.09 m) — the exposed face you see when looking at the finished wall — and adds a flat 5% wastage allowance for cracked or broken bricks. It then multiplies by the number of brick layers (wythes) implied by your wall thickness: a 9 cm (single-wythe) wall uses 1 layer, an 18–23 cm (double-wythe/9-inch) wall uses 2 layers, and so on. The number of bricks is always rounded up to the next whole brick.

Worked Example

For a compound wall 6 m long and 3 m high, built to a standard 9-inch (0.23 m) double-wythe thickness:

Wall Area = 6 × 3 = 18 m²
Brick Layers = ROUND [ 0.23 ÷ 0.09 ] = 2
Bricks (single layer) = ROUND UP [ 18 ÷ (0.19 × 0.09) × 1.05 ] = ROUND UP [ 1,052.6 × 1.05 ] = 1,106
Total Bricks = 1,106 × 2 = 2,212 bricks

So an 18 m² wall face built to double-wythe (9-inch) thickness needs roughly 2,212 standard modular bricks including the 5% breakage buffer. The same wall built as a single-wythe (4.5-inch / 0.09 m) partition would need only 1,106 bricks, since the calculator scales the brick count directly with the thickness you enter.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the wall's length in metres.
  2. Enter the wall's height in metres.
  3. Enter the wall thickness in metres — e.g. 0.09 m for a single 4.5-inch partition wall, or 0.23 m for a standard 9-inch double-wythe wall. This directly changes the number of brick layers used in the calculation.

Things to Know

💡 Tip: The calculator rounds your entered thickness to the nearest whole number of 9 cm brick layers (minimum 1), so entering 0.09–0.13 m gives a single-wythe count, while 0.18–0.27 m gives a double-wythe (9-inch) count. For thicker cavity or triple-wythe walls, enter the full thickness and the calculator will scale the layer count accordingly.
  • Standard Indian modular bricks are 19×9×9 cm with mortar joint, versus older-style non-modular bricks at roughly 23×11×7.5 cm — always confirm which size your mason is using before ordering.
  • A 5% wastage buffer is conservative for machine-made bricks but may need to go up to 8-10% for hand-moulded country bricks, which vary more in size.
