What is an Energy Converter?
An energy converter switches an energy value between scientific and everyday units โ joules, kilojoules, calories, kilocalories, watt-hours, kilowatt-hours, and BTU. Nutrition labels list food energy in kilocalories (often just called "calories"), Indian electricity bills are metered in kilowatt-hours (units), physics problems use joules as the SI standard, and air-conditioner or heater ratings abroad are sometimes quoted in BTU. Anyone comparing a food label's calorie count with a fitness app's kilojoule reading, or converting a monthly electricity bill's kWh usage into joules for a science assignment, needs a fast and reliable energy conversion.
Conversion Formula
Every unit is converted to joules first (the SI base unit), then divided by the target unit's joule-equivalent:
Result = value in joules รท (target unit factor)
Common Conversion Factors
| Unit | Equal to (joules) |
|---|---|
| Joule (J) | 1 J (base unit) |
| Kilojoule (kJ) | 1,000 J |
| Calorie (cal) | 4.184 J |
| Kilocalorie (kcal) | 4,184 J |
| Watt-hour (Wh) | 3,600 J |
| Kilowatt-hour (kWh) | 3,600,000 J |
| BTU | 1,055.06 J |
Worked Example
A snack packet lists 250 kcal. How many kJ is that (the unit many fitness apps prefer)?
1,046,000 J รท 1,000 = 1,046 kJ
Or convert a 2 kWh electricity bill reading into joules: 2 ร 3,600,000 = 7,200,000 J โ a good illustration of why household energy is billed in kWh rather than raw joules.
