What is a Length Converter?

A length converter translates a distance measurement from one unit into another โ€” millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards, or miles. It's one of the most-used tools online because measurement systems still overlap in daily life: an Indian tailor works in inches and gaz (yards), a property listing quotes plot size in feet, a road sign shows kilometres, and an imported spec sheet arrives in inches or millimetres. Students verifying geometry homework, engineers converting CAD drawings, online shoppers checking a US size chart, and travellers converting mile-based distances into kilometres all rely on quick, accurate unit conversion rather than manual arithmetic.

Conversion Formula

Every unit below is first converted to its metre-equivalent, then divided by the target unit's metre-equivalent:

Value in metres = input value ร— (unit factor)
Result = value in metres รท (target unit factor)

Common Conversion Factors

UnitEqual to (metres)
Millimetre (mm)0.001 m
Centimetre (cm)0.01 m
Metre (m)1 m (base unit)
Kilometre (km)1,000 m
Inch (in)0.0254 m
Foot (ft)0.3048 m
Yard (yd)0.9144 m
Mile (mi)1,609.344 m

Worked Example

Suppose a room measures 12 feet and you need it in metres for a flooring quote:

12 ft ร— 0.3048 = 3.6576 m

Now convert 2 miles of a running route into kilometres: 2 ร— 1,609.344 = 3,218.688 m, which is 3.218688 km โ€” the tool performs this metre-to-km division automatically.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the numeric value you want to convert.
  2. Select the unit you're converting from.
  3. Select the unit you want to convert to.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: When measuring cloth or plot boundaries in India, remember 1 gaz (yard) equals 0.9144 m and is slightly larger than 1 metre โ€” mixing up gaz and metre on a land document can throw off area calculations significantly.

Once you've converted a distance, you may also want the Area Converter for room or plot sizing, or the Speed Converter if you're working with distance-per-time figures.
