What is a Tile Calculator?

A Tile Calculator tells you exactly how many floor or wall tiles to buy for a room, based on the room's area, the tile size, and a wastage allowance for cutting and breakage. It's a go-to tool during Indian home renovations — re-tiling a bathroom, laying vitrified tiles in a living room, or budgeting a new flat's flooring before calling the contractor. Getting the count right avoids under-ordering (fresh batches often have slight shade differences) and over-ordering (locking up cash in unused stock).

Formula

Room Area (m²) = Room Length (m) × Room Width (m)
Tile Area (m²) = (Tile Length ÷ 100) × (Tile Width ÷ 100)
Tiles Required = ROUND UP [ (Room Area ÷ Tile Area) × (1 + Wastage % ÷ 100) ]

Tile dimensions are entered in centimetres (a common Indian tile size is 60×60 cm or 30×30 cm) and converted to metres internally before dividing into the room area. The wastage percentage — typically 10% — accounts for edge cuts, breakage, and pattern matching, and the final count is always rounded up since you can't buy a fraction of a tile.

Worked Example

Say you're tiling a bedroom that is 4 m long and 3 m wide, using 60×60 cm tiles with the default 10% wastage:

Room Area = 4 × 3 = 12 m²
Tile Area = 0.6 × 0.6 = 0.36 m²
Tiles = ROUND UP [ (12 ÷ 0.36) × 1.10 ] = ROUND UP [ 33.33 × 1.10 ] = ROUND UP [ 36.67 ] = 37 tiles

So you'd need 37 tiles of 60×60 cm size to cover a 12 m² room safely — round up to 10 boxes if your tiles are sold 4 per box.

Things to Know

💡 Tip: Always buy 1-2 extra tiles beyond the calculator's suggestion and keep them aside after installation — future repairs on a discontinued tile shade are far more expensive than a few spare pieces today.
  • Larger tiles (like 60×60 cm or 80×80 cm) generally need less wastage than small mosaic or subway tiles because fewer cuts are needed per square metre.
  • For diagonal layouts, bump wastage up to 15-20% since diagonal cuts waste more material at the edges.
  • Vitrified tiles in India are usually sold by the box, not by piece — always check pieces-per-box before ordering.
