What is an Area Calculator?
An Area Calculator works out the surface area of a rectangle, circle, or triangle from simple measurements β useful when planning a plot of land, a garden bed, an irregular room that needs breaking into smaller shapes, or any DIY project where you need square metres or square feet before buying material. It's the geometry building block behind many Indian real-estate and construction calculations, since irregular rooms are almost always measured by splitting them into rectangles and triangles first.
Formula
| Shape | Formula | Inputs |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | Length Γ Width | Length, Width |
| Circle | Ο Γ RadiusΒ² | Radius |
| Triangle | Β½ Γ Base Γ Height | Base, Height |
Worked Example
Rectangle β a plot 10 m long and 8 m wide:
Circle β a circular garden bed with a 7 m radius:
Triangle β a triangular plot with a 6 m base and 4 m height:
How to Use This Calculator
- Select the shape β rectangle, circle, or triangle β from the dropdown.
- Enter the relevant measurements: length & width for a rectangle, radius for a circle, or base & height for a triangle.
- Click Calculate to see the area in square units.
- For an irregular plot or room, split it into two or more of these basic shapes and add the results together.
Things to Know
- This calculator returns area in generic "sq units," so make sure all your inputs use the same unit (all metres, or all feet) before calculating.
- For L-shaped or irregular rooms, divide the space into rectangles and/or triangles, calculate each separately, and sum the results β this is exactly how flooring and tiling contractors estimate irregular spaces.
- Once you have your total area, head to the Tile Calculator or Flooring Calculator to work out material quantities.
