What is a Volume Converter?

The Volume Converter converts a quantity of liquid or volume from one unit to another — millilitres, litres, cups, pints, and gallons — using litres as the common base unit. It's especially useful in Indian kitchens where recipes sourced from US or UK cookbooks and YouTube channels use cups, tablespoons, or gallons, while Indian packaging and measuring jars are almost always marked in millilitres and litres.

How It Works

Every supported unit has a fixed conversion factor into litres (the base unit). To convert a value from one unit to another, the calculator first multiplies your input by the "from" unit's factor to get the amount in litres, then divides that litre value by the "to" unit's factor.

Value in Litres = Input × Factor(From Unit)
Result = Value in Litres ÷ Factor(To Unit)

Worked Example

Convert 1 cup to millilitres:

  • Step 1: 1 cup × 0.236588 = 0.236588 litres.
  • Step 2: 0.236588 litres ÷ 0.001 (the ml factor) = 236.59 ml.

This matches the standard US "cup" measure (≈237 ml) used in most online recipes — handy to know since a "cup" isn't a unit sold in Indian shops, but many home cooks eyeball it using a standard 250 ml measuring cup instead, which is roughly 5% larger than a true US cup.
