What is a Mileage Calculator?

A Mileage Calculator tells you your vehicle's real-world fuel efficiency in kilometres per litre (km/L) — the number Indian car and bike owners obsess over when comparing petrol, diesel, or CNG variants. Instead of trusting the ARAI-certified mileage figure printed in a brochure (which is measured under lab conditions), this calculator uses your own actual distance and fuel-filled data to show what mileage you're really getting in city traffic, highway driving, or hilly terrain.

Formula

Mileage (km/L) = Distance Travelled (km) ÷ Fuel Used (Litres)

The most accurate way to measure this is the full-tank method: fill your tank completely, reset your trip odometer to zero, drive normally until the tank is nearly empty, then fill it up again and note exactly how many litres went in — that litre figure is your "fuel used."

Worked Example

Suppose you filled your tank, drove 300 km, and then it took 20 litres to fill up again:

Mileage = 300 ÷ 20 = 15 km/L

A mileage of 15 km/L is typical for a petrol hatchback in mixed city and highway driving in India. Diesel sedans and hatchbacks often return 18-22 km/L, while larger SUVs and petrol-only city driving can dip to 8-12 km/L due to traffic and AC load.

Things to Know

💡 Tip: Track your mileage over 3-4 tank fills rather than just one — a single reading can be skewed by short city trips, AC usage, or a fuel station pump that isn't perfectly calibrated. Average readings give a far more reliable number.
  • City traffic with frequent stop-start driving can cut mileage by 20-30% compared to steady highway cruising.
